Siyo shook himself awake; He needed to get out of these cursed caverns. Siyo bolted upright, and yelled at the recruits near him. They stirred, and brought their rifles up, the ones who still had them. Siyo turned to his right, and sure enough, a DI had fallen into a sickly green blob. Siyo rushed towards him, but he was too late. The blob burst open, and small Vesmos screamed as they entered the world. They clacked their tiny jaws, which were filled with razor sharp teeth. They saw their meal, and delved into the DI. His screams soon drowned out as one of the Vesmos slithered down his throat.
Siyo urged the recruits to move, or they would share the DI’s fate. Siyo felt that blinding fear, the need to escape, survive, just like the day this event truly occurred. He rushed through the first few caverns, not caring to stop to see what horrors they held. A recruit cried out, as a fully-grown Vesmos landed on top of him. Siyo turned, unlike the before, raised his rifle and pulled the trigger.
“You cannot change anything, time does not change.”
Siyo hated the voice with every fiber of his being when the tingle occurred yet again, and Siyo was running, as the recruit cried in agony.
The recruits rushed through the next few caverns, ignoring the sounds of Vesmos emerging from rifts in the walls. Their cries echoed through the tunnels, and encouraged the recruits to run faster.
Siyo was beginning to call out for them to stop, when the ground caved in beneath the recruit in front of him. Siyo slid to a halt, and looked down, already knowing what he would see. The recruit was stirring, and he took quick notice of that oozing green blob in front of him. He glanced helplessly in Siyo’s direction, and raised his Slicer pistol to his helmet visor. Siyo ran past as the discharge of a photon round reverberated around the tunnel.
Thirty seconds later, they reached the central chamber. The walls were slick with slime, and the floor was slightly sticky, with small paths marking Vesmos traveled through here often.
“This is where time will change, alter what happens here, and you will have the last tool for your task.”
Siyo climbed to the top of the rocks, and motioned for the recruits to join him. He began to pile rocks around the base, making makeshift walls for them to cover against. As Siyo pulled the last rock needed for the wall, the voice signaled the time for change.
“That was your mistake, take the rock beneath instead, and your task will be finished.”
As Siyo tugged on the rock, a distinct click sounded. As the gears turned, the Vesmos entered. The recruits began to fire, and the light shot from the floor. Metal replaced stone, and the pile of rock became a generator of a single beam of solid white light.
“Freedom at last, your task is complete, and your memory of anything that has transpired will vanish. My thanks for your task, and you will soon see the repercussions of your mistake.”
Siyo cried in defeat as the light turned blood red, and enveloped his vision, his body, and his mind.
